Two Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) projects on Interstate 10 will affect West Valley and Phoenix-to-Tucson freight over the next several weeks. On the west side, the westbound I-10 frontage road at the Loop 101 interchange closes for two weeks starting Monday, October 26. South of Phoenix, ADOT has started work on the third of four segments in the I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor, and there are overnight lane restrictions every week. Here are the details, taken from ADOT’s own project pages.
Loop 101/I-10 interchange: westbound frontage road closure
According to ADOT’s Loop 101 and I-10 System Interchange project page:
- Full closure: the westbound I-10 frontage road will be closed from 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9. ADOT suggests McDowell Road as the westbound alternate.
- One lane after that: the westbound frontage road will be narrowed to one lane between 91st and 99th avenues from 5 a.m. Nov. 9 to 5 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, and again from 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, to 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7.
- Ongoing on the freeway: eastbound I-10 between 99th and 75th avenues has an 11-foot lane width restriction and a reduced 55 mph speed limit through Dec. 31.
- Thomas Road: eastbound and westbound Thomas Road at Loop 101 is narrowed to one lane in each direction from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Friday nights. Left turns are still allowed.
The project adds a direct HOV ramp inside the interchange, widens Loop 101 and I-10, builds a new “slip ramp” connection to 91st Avenue and extends the southbound Loop 101 off-ramp at McDowell Road. ADOT says construction began in mid-May 2026 and is expected to take about three years. ADOT is building it with the Maricopa Association of Governments and the cities of Phoenix, Tolleson, Avondale, Goodyear and Glendale.
I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor: third segment under way
On October 5, ADOT announced active construction on an 11-mile stretch of I-10 between Loop 202 and the Gila River. In this segment, crews will add a third general-purpose lane in both directions and an HOV lane from Loop 202 to Riggs Road. They will also rebuild the Wild Horse Pass Boulevard, Riggs Road and Queen Creek Road/SR 347 interchanges and build a new interchange at Koli Road. ADOT expects all four segments of the 26-mile corridor to be finished by late 2029.
The corridor project site calls this stretch “a freight thoroughfare.” When it’s done, I-10 will have three lanes in each direction all the way between Phoenix and Tucson. For the week of Oct. 18 to 24, ADOT listed nightly one-lane restrictions near Dirk Lay Road (Milepost 182) from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday, Oct. 23, and on westbound I-10 between Casa Blanca Road and Goodyear Road (Mileposts 176 to 169) from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The schedule is updated weekly and can change because of weather.
What this means for shippers and carriers
- West Valley pickups and deliveries: if a dock near 91st to 99th Avenue depends on the westbound frontage road, plan to use McDowell Road from Oct. 26 to Nov. 9. Tell your carrier about it when you book.
- Wide loads: an 11-foot lane is tight for oversize and overdimensional loads. Check the ADOT restrictions and your permit route before you set a pickup window.
- Phoenix to Tucson at night: overnight one-lane stretches south of Loop 202 can slow night runs. Check AZ511 before dispatch.
- Other Valley work: our earlier update covers the Loop 303 and I-17 closures and height limit.
Connect Express plans Phoenix truckload shipping around these work zones from our base in Glendale, AZ, at 5701 W Maryland Ave, Glendale, AZ 85301. Questions about a load that crosses I-10 this fall? Call 480-401-1998 or email admin@connectexpressllc.com.
