Construction to widen Interstate 10 in the West Valley starts this month, and it begins with two full weekend closures. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) says eastbound I-10 will be closed between Verrado Way and Citrus Road from 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9. Westbound I-10 follows the next weekend. If your freight moves on I-10 west of Phoenix, plan around both weekends now.
The Two I-10 Weekend Closures
- Eastbound, Nov. 6–9: I-10 closed between Verrado Way and Citrus Road. The eastbound on-ramps at Verrado Way, Jackrabbit Trail and Miller, Watson and Perryville roads also close. ADOT’s suggested detour is eastbound Yuma or McDowell roads to get back on eastbound I-10 at Citrus Road.
- Westbound, Nov. 13–16: I-10 closed between Loop 303 and Verrado Way from 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16. The Loop 303 ramps to westbound I-10 and the westbound on-ramps at Bullard Avenue, Estrella Parkway, Jackrabbit Trail and Citrus and Perryville roads also close. ADOT’s suggested detour is westbound Van Buren Street, Yuma or McDowell roads to rejoin I-10 at Verrado Way.
ADOT’s project page lists a 10 p.m. Friday start in one section and 9 p.m. in its closure notice, and says schedules can change with weather. Check AZ511 before dispatch.
What ADOT Is Building
The first phase covers I-10 from Verrado Way to Citrus Road. ADOT, working with the Maricopa Association of Governments and the cities of Goodyear and Buckeye, plans to widen I-10 to the outside to add an HOV lane in each direction, widen bridges where needed, resurface with diamond grinding, and add noise abatement where warranted. The weekend closures are for removing worn asphalt and striping lanes in a temporary layout.
More work is coming. ADOT plans weekend and weeknight overnight lane restrictions starting in mid-November to set work-zone barriers, weekend closures of Citrus Road in early 2027 to remove the outer part of the bridge, and paving of the new lanes starting in spring 2027. Outside of closures, ADOT says the current number of I-10 lanes will stay open. The stretch from SR 85 to Verrado Way is in final design and waiting on state funding.
Grand Avenue Closes the Same Weekend
Closer to Glendale, ADOT’s US 60 (Grand Avenue) pavement project also has a weekend closure. Grand Avenue will be closed between 24th Drive and 27th Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, one direction at a time. ADOT suggests Encanto Boulevard or Thomas Road for east-west trips and 27th or 23rd avenues for north-south trips. Through Saturday morning, Nov. 7, eastbound Grand Avenue is also down to one lane between 75th and Northern avenues from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
What Shippers Can Do Now
- Move weekend pickups and deliveries in Buckeye and Goodyear off the closed stretch, or add time for the detour.
- Tell receivers early if a Monday morning appointment depends on a load moving over the weekend. Our guide on how to reduce freight delays covers what to send.
- For westbound freight on our Phoenix to Southern California trucking lane, watch the Nov. 13–16 closure in particular.
- Look back at our earlier I-10 construction update for other work zones around the Valley.
