Starting today, Monday, October 26, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) begins alternating lane restrictions on Interstate 10 in Ehrenberg, reducing eastbound and westbound I-10 to one lane between the California/Arizona state line (milepost 0) and Dome Rock Road (milepost 12). This 12-mile stretch in La Paz County carries most of the truck traffic between Phoenix and Southern California, so westbound and eastbound loads on that run should plan for slower trips through the work zone this week and next.

What ADOT Announced

According to ADOT’s October 15 bulletin, drivers should expect these daytime lane restrictions:

  • 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, October 26, through Thursday, October 29
  • 6 a.m. to noon, Friday, October 30
  • 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, November 2

During those hours I-10 is reduced to one lane in each direction, the speed limit drops to 55 mph, and a 14-foot vehicle width restriction applies. The closures are part of ADOT’s I-10 California/Arizona Border to Dome Rock Road pavement rehabilitation project. Crews will mill and replace pavement, extend pipe culverts, replace guardrail and end terminals, and install new signs and pavement markings. The project started in October 2026 and is expected to be finished in late summer 2027.

KTAR News reported on October 26, citing ADOT, that restrictions could run around the clock Monday through Friday while the work continues, with lanes reopened on weekends and holidays. Guardrail work is planned during the day and paving at night.

A Second Project on the Same Corridor

Farther east, ADOT has tentatively scheduled its I-10 Burnt Wells Rest Area truck parking expansion at milepost 86 near Tonopah to begin in November 2026. The project adds new overflow truck parking lots along with paving, prefabricated restrooms, wheel stops and trash receptacles. ADOT says the rest area will stay open during construction. Once it is finished, drivers who stage near the state line before a California delivery should find it easier to park.

What It Means for Phoenix Shippers

For most freight, the 14-foot limit is not a problem. Arizona law (A.R.S. 28-1093) allows vehicles up to 102 inches wide on interstates, and standard dry van, reefer and flatbed loads fit inside that limit. The real exposure is permitted wide loads. Any oversize load wider than 14 feet will need to cross the work zone outside restriction hours, and that should be settled when the move is planned and the oversize permits are requested, not at the scale.

Dock appointments in the Inland Empire and Los Angeles that depend on a same-day run from the Valley should include extra buffer time through November 2. This comes on top of the I-10 construction near Phoenix we covered earlier this month, and it falls just days before the Vincent Thomas Bridge closure near the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach begins on November 7. Shippers moving freight from Phoenix to the coast should check az511.gov before dispatch, because ADOT says schedules are subject to change based on weather and other unforeseen factors. ADOT’s project line is 855.712.8530.
